While all three are beautiful and considered “solid” gold, they each serve a different purpose, and understanding the differences can help you make a choice that’s perfect for your lifestyle, budget, and the story you want your jewellery to tell.
Let’s start with the basics: karat (with a 'K') refers to the purity of gold, with 24K being pure gold. But pure gold is too soft for everyday jewellery, so it's blended with stronger metals to create a durable alloy. That’s where 9K, 14K, and 18K come in.
9K gold contains 37.5% pure gold and the rest is made up of alloy metals. It’s the most affordable and the most durable option, ideal for everyday wear and for those who want a lower-maintenance option. I generally recommend this one for chunkier jewels like signet rings.
The colour is slightly paler/ochre than higher karats, but it still has that warm, golden tone many people love. If you're after practicality and value, this is a great place to start.
14K gold is a step up in both purity and colour, made with 58.5% gold. It offers a deeper yellow tone while maintaining excellent strength and scratch resistance.
It’s a standard in countries like the US.
It balances luxury and wearability. If you want something that feels classic and enduring without being too delicate, 14K is a beautiful middle ground.
18K gold is where things get really luxurious, it’s made with 75% pure gold, giving it that rich, buttery glow. It’s often chosen for engagement rings and heirloom pieces. While it’s slightly softer and may require a bit more care, it’s still perfect for everyday use.
It’s the standard in countries like the UK and France.
So, how do you choose? It depends on what matters most to you. Durability? Budget? Colour? Sentiment? There’s no wrong answer, only the right gold for your story ;)
