Navaratna jewellery originates from Hindu astrological tradition, in which nine gemstones are arranged to represent the nine celestial influences, or navagraha. Historically, these pieces functioned as protective and auspicious objects intended to promote prosperity and spiritual harmony. The tradition dates back centuries within South Asian jewellery, though by the nineteenth century Navaratna compositions had begun appearing more widely beyond India during the colonial period. Victorian jewellers occasionally adapted these gemstone arrangements into Western settings, merging Indian symbolism with European goldsmithing.

This example reflects that intersection well. Crafted in 18 carat yellow gold, the ring centres around a natural chrysoberyl cat’s eye, surrounded by old mine-cut diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires in multiple hues, and a natural pearl. Rather than prioritising strict symmetry or uniformity, the composition relies on contrast and chromatic variation, creating a surface that feels layered. Such use of colour was comparatively unusual within mainstream Victorian jewellery, which more commonly favoured matched stones and controlled palettes.

What makes Navaratna rings especially compelling within a Victorian context is the coexistence of multiple symbolic systems within a single object. Alongside the Victorian fascination with sentiment and gemstone meaning sits a much older astrological framework tied to protection and cosmic order. The result is a ring that feels both highly decorative and intellectually rich, carrying cultural references that extend beyond the immediate setting.
