Belle Époque Pearl and Diamond Necklace

Belle Époque Pearl and Diamond Necklace

£4,160.00

An exquisite Art Nouveau pendant of graceful, organic design, originally probably conceived as a brooch and later converted for wear as a pendant. The piece is crafted in a sophisticated combination of platinum and 9ct gold, highlighting the period’s characteristic fluid lines and delicate craftsmanship. The beautiful drop shaped pearl seems to be floating and is most probably a natural saltwater pearl (untested).

Do note the metalwork of the back of the pendant, a rare example of exceptional craftsmanship. The piece is in excellent condition.

The frame displays the sinuous, nature-inspired aesthetic synonymous with the Art Nouveau movement, with fine handmade detailing. Suspended from a silver chain, which was added at a later date.

Crafted during the Belle Époque, this pendant reflects a shift towards lighter and more fluid jewellery. The development of platinum-working at the turn of the twentieth century allowed for finer settings, moving away from heavier Victorian styles and letting more light pass through the piece. The openwork design is typical of the period. Its lines draw from the natural forms associated with Art Nouveau, while the suspended pearl introduces movement. Diamonds are used here not only for display, but to define the structure through light.

The setting combines platinum at the front with gold at the reverse, a practical solution used by jewellers at the time. Platinum provided the strength needed for fine, detailed work, while gold sat more comfortably against the skin. Pieces like this were often designed as brooches, with this piece in particular having a screw off back. It was then fully converted to a pendant, reflecting changing habits of dress. What remains is a piece that feels considered and wearable, with an emphasis on line and proportion.
