Acrostic rings belong to a broader Victorian fascination with coded jewellery, where gemstones, flowers, and symbols were used to communicate emotions indirectly. The word itself comes from the French regard, implying not only affection, but as a way of holding someone in one’s thoughts. In jewellery of the nineteenth century, sentiment was often expressed through implication rather than overt declaration, particularly within courtship and upper-middle-class social customs where displays would be viewed as inelegant.

By arranging gemstones so their initials spelt out a word, jewellers turned rings into small private messages. Here, Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby and Diamond form REGARD, concealed within what otherwise appears to be simply a multi-coloured gemstone ring. Pieces like this were exchanged between lovers, husbands and wives, or occasionally given within close familial relationships. They sat between adornment and correspondence: objects intended to be worn daily, but also read and understood by the wearer alone.

Crafted in 15 carat gold, the mount has the rich warmth associated with nineteenth-century alloys, while the varied gemstones create a softer and more nuanced surface than later mass-produced interpretations of acrostic jewellery. What makes REGARD rings particularly compelling is their subtlety. Unless you know the language of acrostic jewellery, the meaning remains completely hidden. The ring exists as a beautifully proportioned antique piece. Once understood, it becomes something much more personal.
